U.S. Marshals Service Reports Threats to Federal Judges Doubled

457 serious threats were investigated in 2023 compared with 224 in 2021.

The U.S. Marshals Service reported this week that threats against federal judges more than doubled between 2021 and 2023. The agency is responsible for protecting the 2,700 federal judges in the U.S. When a threat made against court personnel is labeled as “serious,” the agency launches an investigation into the source of the threat.

In 2021, the U.S. Marshals Service only identified 224 serious threats, while 457 serious threats were made against federal judges in 2023. Over 70 percent of federal judges have opted into the agency’s home security program.

“The threat environment right now that is causing me concern is when people disagree with the judicial process or the government, and that turns into those verbal attacks,” U.S. Marshals Director Ronald Davis said. “And that is the beginning of the process that threatens the judiciary and threatens our democracy.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Director Davis to receive God’s guidance as he heads the U.S. Marshals Service.
  • For the U.S. marshals who are tasked with protecting federal judges.
  • For the safety and well-being of federal judges across the nation.
